The role and its purpose

This is an exciting time to join our new corps of heritage volunteers as the Royal Hospital restores the Soane Stables and opens a Visitor Centre with new displays telling the history of the Royal Hospital and Chelsea Pensioners. This project has been part funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and includes the development and delivery of heritage activities, tours, events and workshops for Pensioners, local residents, veterans, and tourists.

We are looking for volunteers with a friendly attitude who enjoy interacting with a variety of people. You will have a genuine interest in working with people living with dementia and their carers and must have excellent communication skills. No pre existing experience is required. Relevant and ongoing training will be provided.

You will have the ability to remain calm in the event of an emergency and have a good knowledge of procedures in place to deal with any such events (these are provided for you in the Volunteer Handbook and can be discussed at your induction).

Although we don’t specify the time that you commit to volunteering, we ask that you give a minimum of 4 hours a month, ideally over any one weekday, between Monday and Friday.

Please see the full role profile for other training and development opportunities available within this role.

Before your start date: You will be required to attend induction training, including information on your role as a volunteer and RHC policies and procedures which will support you in your day-to-day role. This will include safeguarding & professional boundaries training which you will be required to attend before you commence your volunteer role.

Other training available:
Refresher training is required two years after your start date. We offer regular supervision to support you in your role and provide you with an opportunity to discuss your progress and needs through regular one to ones.

Other key information

There is a short settling in period of three months to see if the role is right for you and if you are right for the role.

You must be 18 years old or over to carry out the role.

You will be required to complete a safe recruitment process, including providing 2 references and an enhanced DBS check which will be provided by the RHC.

Having a criminal conviction will not necessarily prevent you from volunteering with us. We assess each situation on an individual basis.

The RHC will reimburse reasonable expenses incurred whilst volunteering in accordance with the volunteer and expenses policies. All expenses to be reclaimed should be agreed with the Volunteer Manager in advance.

This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to gain knowledge and experience, volunteering in an office and public environment and supporting the Public Engagement Department. If you think this is you, we would love to hear from you.

The tasks and activities listed in this role description are intended as a guideline to the duties you will perform as a VAWEC Admin Support Volunteer, to clarify your volunteer role for the benefit of all concerned. It does not form the basis of a contract of employment. Volunteer activities may be varied from time to time in consultation with yourself.
